Women up to 30 years old experience the pain of the period, forcing them to let what they do such as school or job to be able to cope with. Olive oil, according to a recent research, can alleviate these pains.
The study was conducted in 2 groups of 30 women from 17 to 30 years old, who often suffered from mild pains to the appearance of the known period cramps. The study was done by measuring pain intensity on a scale of 1-10 with an average of 6,7. One group of women was instructed to consume 25ml extra virgin olive oil daily for 2 months starting two weeks before the start of their cycle, while the second group was given 400mg ibuprofen three times a day during the pain period.
The women in the olive-oil group recorded the pain level of 2,4 on average in the first month, and the pain dropped to 1,4 in the second month. The second group which receiving medicinal products, the average was 4,7 in the first month and 2,4 in the second month.
These beneficial effects of olive oil are due to the oleocanthal, a polyphenol with anti-inflammatory properties. However, the anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil are cumulative, which means that it should be consumed daily.
